The recent awards season proved to be a shower of blessing for Sony BMG artists led by rock band Pupil. The band, fronted by Ely Buendia with Yan Yuzon on guitars, Dok Sergio on bass and Wendell Garcia on drums, bagged five major victories at the 2008 NU Rock Awards held at Silver City Mall which includes the most coveted Artist Of The Year, Album Of The Year (Wildlife), Producer of the Year (Pupil and Jerome Velasco), Drummer of the Year (Garcia) and Best Music Video (Monobloc).
If that wasn’t enough, Pupil was likewise voted by viewers of Sunday variety show S.O.P. as Best Rock Band at their recent “Pasiklaband Awards.”
“We were surprised with all these awards and we are so grateful to those who supported us especially the fans,” guitarist Yuzon said.
Other Sony BMG awardees of this annual event to recognize the influence of bands in the Philippines were 6cyclemind (Band of the Year), Callalily (Song of the Year for “Susundan”) and its vocalist Kean Cipriano (Favorite Vocalist).
Meanwhile at the 21st Awit Awards, rap artist Gloc 9 and vocal group Ryan Cayabyab Singers each snatched 2 awards. The country’s fastest rapper won Best Dance for the single “Sumayaw Ka” and Best Rap for “Lando” which featured master rapper FrancisM. Both singles are included in his critically-acclaimed major label debut “Diploma.” Formed last year by maestro Ryan Cayabyab, the Ryan Cayabyab Singers was honored with Best Performance by a New Group Recording Artist and Best R&B awards. Comedian/TV host Joey de Leon bagged the Best Novelty honors for the phenomenal single “Itaktak Mo” while Broadway star and Tony awardee Lea Salonga is this year’s recipient of the Dangal ng Musikang Pilipino Award.
