PUPIL “LIMITERS OF THE INFINITY POOL” OUT NOW!

The long wait is over.

PUPIL, with guitarist and frontman Ely Buendia, lead guitarist Yan Yuzon, bassist Dok Sergio and drummer Wendell Garcia, shake up the neighbourhood of established notions yet again with its newest album, Limiters of the Infinity Pool.

After two successful collections, Beautiful Machines (2005) and Wildlife (2007), Limiters of the Infinity Pool began taking life in the early part of 2010. Coming three years after the award-winning Wildlife, it represents the longest gap between albums in the group’s career. Pre-production alone took nine whole months, a process which involved trading and emailing song ideas and demos on every imaginable medium, from pen and ink to DAWs (digital audio workstations). The best ideas then entered the group dynamic, as they built up the songs together through countless jamming sessions at Ely’s house – interrupted only by impromptu PS3 tournaments and pochero dinners courtesy of Wendell. Lead guitarist Yan Yuzon pretty much wrote his contribution on the spot during the recording sessions. Wendell Garcia, the least “techie” guy in the group, recorded his contributions on his cellphone. These and other moments of musical play and creativity characterise the album, which began taking shape at Wombworks Studio, with long-time sound-man Pat Tirano handling engineering and co-producing duties, taking the role of “Limiter” to the group’s “Infinity Pool” of ideas.

The best thing about Limiters of the Infinity Pool is that Pupil’s new sound is more elusive. Dense and layered in sound and meaning, yet with a deep and grounded melodic sensibility. Walking the fine line between experimentation and tradition, the new tracks are strikingly unconventional, reinforcing the band’s standing attitude against the limits of being specific genres or labels.

TNT, the band’s pick as first single, is reflective of Pupil’s well-known style of effervescent guitars and an unpredictable rhythm which dominated their previous albums. Pusakal is a certified crowd favourite with its relatable/sing-able “love song” lyrics and marks the band’s first use of a live string quartet. 20/20, featuring Francis Reyes on guitar and Amanda Ling on keys and with lyrical references to The Creation, is sure to be heralded as one of the album’s highlights with funky club beats seemingly ready-made for the dance floor. Pikit-Bukas, one of Dok’s tracks, with its manifesto lyrics and bouncy groove, in some ways may be the band’s closest attempt at folk. Distortion and Low End bring out more sonic experimentation with gritty, overdriven guitars. One-Two, Yan’s spontaneous brainchild, features distorted vocals, poppy handclaps and synth leads. Morning Gift marks drummer Wendell Garcia’s debut as songwriter and lead vocalist, with poignant lyrics and an expressive arrangement, in a song especially dedicated to his son.

Pupil has always been known for reinvention and inspires yet again with their latest album. Limiters shows the band furthering its musical progression with strong songs from all members that redefine their sound. The album is a brilliant attempt to change today’s musical complacency – through the infinity pool that overspills with their genius in challenging the norms of Filipino music, creating something bigger that shows the music scene the confidence to go beyond its limits.

  1. im so exited to buy a copy of this album.. i’m a big fan of ely since he first rock our nation… i was dismayed when erserheads disbanded, but i guess their fans can do nothing bout that anymore… ely is still the best… but i’m sure eraserheads fans out there would love to hear them again making new albums…
