Madz- UNESCO Artists for Peace awarding 2 (high res)
The Philippine Madrigal Singers, one of the most awarded choirs in Asia and the world, made the country proud once again as they were recently designated by United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Director General Koïchiro Matsuura as Artist For Peace.

Held last July 27, ceremony took place just before the group’s concert at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France. The Philippine Madrigal singers received this distinction “in recognition of their efforts to promote dialogue and understanding among peoples in Southeast Asia, their contribution to extend UNESCO’s message of peace and tolerance, and their dedication to the ideals and aims of the Organization.”

The Philippine Madrigal Singers, known as the MADZ, were brought together in 1963 by music professor Andrea O. Veneracion. The group performs many different musical genres but specializes in the Renaissance style for which it is named. It has won numerous awards, including the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing in 2007 (Arezzo , Italy), and its influence in the Philippines and throughout Asia is far-reaching. Responsible for training more than 200 singers and choral music specialists since its creation, the group goes on tour twice a year, not only abroad but also to the most remote parts of the Philippines.

Named for two years, the Philippine Madrigal Singers are expected to bring their support to UNESCO programmes on cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue. Specific projects include a series of Concerts for Peace, a Sing for Peace festival and various choral singing classes, workshops and educational activities.

UNESCO Artists for Peace are world-famous personalities who use their influence, charisma and prestige to help promote UNESCO’s message and programmes. Among them are musician Manu Dibango (Cameroon), actress Patricia Velasquez (Venezuela), musician Gilberto Gil (Brazil), dancer Miyako Yoshida (Japan), soprano Sumi Jo (Republic of Korea), singer and founder of the musical group Gypsy Kings Chico Bouchikhi (France) and conductor Valery Gergiev (Russian Federation).

The Philippine Madrigal Singers will share their honor to Filipinos with their upcoming concert entitled “MADZ About Love…Madz About Peace” to be held at the CCP Main Theatre on August 27 and 28 at 8pm. This event is presented by Unilever Philippnes, PLDT MyDSL, Sony Philippines, Sony Music and Cultural Center of the Philippines. One response to “PHILIPPINE MADRIGAL SINGERS IS UNESCO’S ARTIST FOR PEACE”

  1. This is “NOT” surprising…really… I mean it..

My soul was touched when I heard them once perform at the Robinson’s Galleria for their Acclamation album–I grabbed a copy and have them sign the cover. Every morning I listen to the songs and believe me…it has been my daily dose of prayer.

My wife though does not believe in chorale singing and I pity her. I am confident that once she hears you sing, her entire life would change. I am now working hard to raise enough money to grab tickets on your next concert (basta local lang ha)

Kepp touching lives and saving souls….I am one of them…
